Frequently Asked Questions

Fused silica is a synthetic amorphous silicon dioxide with excellent physical and optical properties.

Fused silica has excellent homogeneity, is bubble and inclusion-free, has very low stress birefringence, and good optical properties in three directions. It is also thermally stable with a low coefficient of linear expansion and has a high working temperature.

Fused silica is commonly used in standard optical components, large laser systems for fusion, spacecraft windows, view port windows, pressure windows, test flats, transmission flats, light pipes, prisms, and telescope mirrors.

Fused silica can be polished using standard optical fabrication techniques.

Advanced Glass Industries keeps approximately 18,000 lbs of Corning 7980 fused silica in a range of different grades in inventory.
