LEJ – LED & Gas Discharge Light Sources

About LEJ – Leistungselektronik JENA GmbH

LEJ is a family-run photonics and power electronics company in Jena, Germany, a historic center of optics. It was founded in 1991 as a spin-off from ZEISS research. For more than 30 years LEJ has designed and built light sources and power supplies for scientific and industrial optical systems, and it is an OEM supplier to well-known instrument brands worldwide.

LEJ sells standard products under two brands: LUXYR (light sources) and AMPYR (power electronics). It also develops custom OEM light engines and drivers from UV-C to NIR. About one third of the team are engineers, and electronics, mechanics, thermal design and software are all done in-house. That lets LEJ go from concept to a validated prototype quickly, then on to reliable small and medium series production.

Product portfolio

LED light sources (LUXYR)

  • LED MULTILUX: 8-channel high-power fluorescence light source with switching times from 1 µs and integrated excitation filters, for fluorescence, multispectral, brightfield, darkfield and forensic imaging
  • LED MAGNA: 2-channel UV/VIS LED source for direct microscope coupling, triggerable up to 100 kHz
  • LED FLUO: compact, ready-to-use fluorescence LED source covering 410–650 nm (BFP to Cy5)
  • LQ-LED 8: 8-channel LED fiber light source with freely selectable wavelengths, used in Kerr microscopy
  • LED PICO and LED NANO: ultra-compact UV-A to VIS and VIS LED light sources
  • LH LED 100: single-channel VIS LED that works as a cold light source or a halogen replacement
  • LED INSPEX: 360° rotatable high-power VIS LED source that replaces xenon lamps in inline inspection

Gas discharge light sources

  • LQ-HXP 120: 120 W mercury short-arc reflector lamp source for fluorescence microscopy (about 10,000 units sold)
  • Deep UV System: Hg-Xe illumination up to 100 W for deep-UV inspection and analysis, including 248 nm
  • ebq 100-04: illumination systems for xenon, mercury, mixed-gas and spectral lamps

LED driver electronics (AMPYR)

  • LED Pulse Controller: digital controller for pulsed LEDs and LED clusters. It has four independent channels, up to 30 A pulse current and up to 100 kHz pulse frequency, with Ethernet/USB triggering and monitoring.

Electronic ballasts and lamp power supplies

  • EBU Series: universal ballasts for short-arc gas discharge lamps up to 1,350 W
  • EB Series 04: ballasts for Hg, Xe and mixed-gas lamps up to 100 W
  • XE FLASH: compact xenon flash lamp controller
  • EBS 60 AC: ballast for spectral lamps up to 60 W

Accessories
Microscope adapters for ZEISS, Leica, Evident/Olympus and Nikon stands, liquid light guides, POF fiber bundles, control consoles and OEM replacement lamps (HXP, HBO).

Applications

  • Microscopy: fluorescence, UV, Kerr, transmitted light, cold light and multispectral illumination
  • Semiconductor: wafer and photomask inspection, UV/deep-UV surface and coating inspection, metrology, in-process quality control
  • Machine vision and image processing: inline high-speed inspection, LED and xenon strobe/flash lighting, camera/PLC/encoder synchronization
  • Analytical instruments: fluorescence scanners, UV/VIS spectroscopy and photometry, cell analysis, FISH, lab automation, microfluidics
  • Medical technology and research

OEM and custom development

LEJ works with OEMs across the whole product lifecycle:

  • Concept, electronics and PCB design, thermal and mechanical design, firmware
  • Functional samples and prototypes built and tested in Jena
  • Pilot runs and series production of 10 to 1,000 units per year
  • Private-label products, redesigns, xenon-to-LED conversions and obsolescence management for long-term availability

Proven results:

  • Freight car inspection: a custom 16-channel high-power LED flash controller (up to 2.5 kW pulse power per channel, 40 kW total peak) running from a 500 W supply. It went from development to series production in about six months.
  • PMMA film inspection: a 120 W rotatable LED source replaced a xenon system. Rated lifetime went from about 2,000 h to about 30,000 h, annual lighting costs fell by about 92%, and the ROI came in under two years. It was ready for series production in two months.
