APE Angewandte Physik & Elektronik GmbH is a world-leading supplier in the field of ultrashort laser pulse diagnostics and tunable wavelength conversion. Founded in 1992, the company is headquartered in Berlin and employs about 70 people. APE is a hidden champion in the photonics industry, specializing in the ultrashort pulse niche, closely connected with users and customers, but relatively unknown to the general public. The company is a sought-after OEM development partner and supplier for laser manufacturers, microscopy companies, and other technology giants. Over the years, APE has developed an impressive array of more than 30 products, from spectrometers to quantum-dot single photon generation sources, entirely developed and produced within its headquarters in Berlin.

APE's best-known product line is the autocorrelators, which are used for pulse duration measurement of picosecond and femtosecond lasers. Measuring and controlling the ultra-short pulse duration is a key parameter for the use of this technology. APE autocorrelators are known for their accuracy and durability, and it is not uncommon to find devices in use today that were manufactured 20 years ago. APE also achieved its breakthrough in the tunable wavelength generation business in the 1990s with Optical Parametric Oscillators (OPOs), as part of a development alliance with a major laser manufacturer.

In recent years, APE has continued to innovate and develop new products, such as the picoEmerald, a major innovation in the field of Coherent Raman laser sources, and Carmina, the first ever integrated MIR laser providing both broadband and narrowband emission. APE's success and expertise in the photonics industry have earned it a reputation as a sought-after partner for developing and supplying advanced photonics equipment to a range of industries. In March 2021, Dr. Konrad von Volkmann was appointed as the new CEO of APE, following a generational change in laser pulse duration measurement. The founders of APE remain in the company and will focus on technical innovation.
