With a legacy spanning over 150 years, their craftsmanship and know-how have been refined over time.
The company traces its roots back to Wilhelm Steeg's "Optisches Institut Wilhelm Steeg" founded in 1855, which focused on polarization optics. In 1877, Peter Reuter became a co-owner, and the company was renamed Dr. Steeg & Reuter. Notably, Dr. Steeg & Reuter GmbH once counted Ernst Leitz, the owner of Leica camera works, as a co-owner. Following the company's confiscation by US forces during World War II, operations resumed swiftly, encompassing the production of optical components and metrology devices utilizing polarization effects.
However, in the 1990s, the profitability of the company declined. It underwent several changes in ownership, ultimately leading to its liquidation. In 2009, Dr. Wolfgang Schneider, with over 20 years of experience in various positions at the previous company, established S & R Optic GmbH. Driven by a team of crystal optics specialists, many of whom had also worked at the former company, they are dedicated to supplying world-class crystal optical components, predominantly crafted from quartz and mica, to customers worldwide.
