Nd:YAG (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet) lasers are a commonly used type of lasers for marking, cutting and welding. Their lasing medium is a crystal with triply ionized neodymium replacing a small fraction (1%) of the yttrium ions in the yttrium aluminium garnet (YAG) crystal lattice. Nd:YAG lasers typically emit light with a wavelength of 1064 nm. They can work in both pulsed and CW modes, and the high intensity Q-switch mode may be efficiently frequency doubled to generate laser light at 532 nm, or higher harmonics at 355, 266 and 213 nm. Because of their shorter wavelengths compared to CO2 lasers, Nd:YAG lasers are able to create more pattern features, and can work on some metal and alloys which are difficult to be processed by CO2 lasers.
